Terms and Conditions
These Terms and Conditions apply to every visit to museum van Bommel van Dam in Venlo.
Section 1 (General Section) applies to every visitor who visits museum van Bommel van Dam individually or as part of a group.
Section 2 (Educational Activities) applies to visitors who book an Educational Activity at museum van Bommel van Dam, such as a course, guided tour or lecture.
Section 3 (General Group Visits) applies to visitors who wish to visit museum van Bommel van Dam as a group, whether or not they are visiting with a company or organisation.
Section 4 (Group Visits by Educational Institutions) applies to educational institutions visiting museum van Bommel van Dam with a group of pupils or students.
Section 1 – General Section
Article 1. Definitions
- Activity Ticket: a printed or digital ticket that gives the holder the right to take part in an Educational Activity at museum van Bommel van Dam.
- Visitor: any person who enters the museum van Bommel van Dam building, with or without a valid Admission Ticket.
- Entrance Ticket: a printed or digital ticket that gives the Visitor access to the exhibition spaces in the museum van Bommel van Dam building during regular opening hours.
- Educational Activity: an activity announced on the museum van Bommel van Dam website, such as a guided tour, workshop, course or lecture, which is offered by museum van Bommel van Dam to the general public. An Educational Activity takes place on a specific date or dates, at a specific time and location, and has a programme described in the events calendar and/or on the education page. Specific conditions may apply to individual Educational Activities, such as a minimum age. These conditions are stated on the museum van Bommel van Dam website or in the relevant brochure.
- Group: a number of people visiting museum van Bommel van Dam together as a group (“Group Visit”).
- Museum van Bommel van Dam: Stichting Museum van Bommel van Dam in Venlo. Its purpose includes preserving, managing, selectively expanding, improving and presenting the collections managed by the Municipality of Venlo / Museum van Bommel van Dam. All agreements are made between the Visitor and Stichting Museum van Bommel van Dam, located at Keulsepoort 1, 5911 BX Venlo, the Netherlands, registered with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce under number 71168923 and VAT number NL858607049B01.
- Museum van Bommel van Dam Building: the areas in and around museum van Bommel van Dam that are open to the public, including the terrace at Keulsepoort 1 in Venlo.
- Admission Ticket: an Entrance Ticket, whether or not combined with a discount card, or another comparable form of admission, such as a written invitation, voucher, time-slot ticket, school pass or annual pass, which gives access to one or more areas of museum van Bommel van Dam.
- Prohibited Items: the items described in Article 3.6.
Article 2. Applicability
2.1 These Terms and Conditions apply to all Visitors to museum van Bommel van Dam.
2.2 These Terms and Conditions also apply to all individuals engaged by museum van Bommel van Dam as part of its activities, including people employed by contractors or suppliers providing services or goods in the museum van Bommel van Dam building, or by another legal entity. That legal entity is responsible for ensuring that every employee or contractor it engages follows these Terms and Conditions.
2.3 Any exceptions to these Terms and Conditions are only valid if they have been expressly agreed in writing.
Article 3. Access to the museum van Bommel van Dam building
3.1 Visitors may only enter the exhibition spaces of museum van Bommel van Dam on presentation of a valid Admission Ticket.
3.2 A Visitor may be refused access or further access to the museum van Bommel van Dam building if museum van Bommel van Dam determines that:
a. the Admission Ticket was not issued by museum van Bommel van Dam or by an organisation or legal entity authorised by museum van Bommel van Dam;
b. the Visitor is clearly under the influence of alcohol, drugs or similar substances;
c. the Visitor is clearly disturbing the peace or appears to intend to disturb the peace;
d. the Visitor wishes to enter the museum van Bommel van Dam building barefoot and/or with a bare upper body.
3.3 Entrance Tickets can be purchased at the ticket desk or online in advance. An Entrance Ticket purchased in advance becomes invalid once the time or time period stated on the ticket has passed.
3.4 Museum van Bommel van Dam may change its regular opening hours because of occasional emergency-response exercises or, in the event of an emergency, because of a full or partial evacuation of the museum van Bommel van Dam building if the museum considers this necessary.
3.5 Museum van Bommel van Dam reserves the right to carry out security checks on Visitors and their belongings. Visitors may be asked to allow museum staff, or persons acting on behalf of the museum, to inspect bags and similar items. A Visitor who refuses to cooperate with an inspection may be refused entry to the museum van Bommel van Dam building and will not be entitled to a refund of the Entrance Ticket.
3.6 The following items (“Prohibited Items”) may not be brought into the museum van Bommel van Dam building:
a. firearms and other weapons capable of firing a projectile or causing injury or damage, or objects that appear capable of being used for this purpose;
b. pointed and/or sharp weapons and sharp objects that could cause injury or damage;
c. blunt objects that could cause injury;
d. explosive or flammable substances;
e. chemical or toxic substances;
d. bottles or containers containing liquids.
3.7 If museum van Bommel van Dam finds Prohibited Items during a security check, the museum will confiscate them. If the Visitor does not wish to hand over an item that may be confiscated, they will be refused access to the museum van Bommel van Dam building and will not be entitled to a refund of the Entrance Ticket.
3.8 Items found during a security check that are prohibited by law will be handed over to the police. A Visitor carrying such items may be detained and handed over to the police.
3.9 For security reasons, Visitors must be identifiable. A Visitor whose face is not visible and who refuses to show their face during a security check may be refused access to the museum van Bommel van Dam building.
3.10 The museum van Bommel van Dam building is accessible to visitors with disabilities. However, the use of vehicles, skates and skateboards is not permitted.
Article 4. Staying in the museum van Bommel van Dam building
4.1 Visitors enter and stay in the museum van Bommel van Dam building at their own risk.
4.2 Visitors must follow the instructions given by clearly identifiable museum van Bommel van Dam staff. If, in the opinion of museum staff, a Visitor acts against these Visitor Terms and Conditions or does not follow instructions, the Visitor may be refused further access to the museum van Bommel van Dam building. In this case, museum van Bommel van Dam is not required to compensate the Visitor for any loss or refund the Entrance Ticket.
If a Visitor repeatedly breaks these Terms and Conditions or ignores instructions from museum staff, museum van Bommel van Dam may refuse that person access to the museum for a certain period. The Visitor will be informed of such a decision as soon as possible and, where possible, in writing.
4.3 Children under the age of 12 may only visit museum van Bommel van Dam when accompanied by an adult.
4.4 Visitors may take handbags and small cases no larger than A4 size into the exhibition spaces. Larger handbags, umbrellas, daypacks and school bags can be stored in the cloakroom or lockers.
Travel luggage and other larger items are only allowed in the museum’s hospitality area. Museum van Bommel van Dam reserves the right to refuse to store certain items.
All wheeled equipment, including prams, pushchairs and wheelchairs, may be subject to inspection.
4.5 Visitors are responsible for any damage they cause to the museum van Bommel van Dam building, its contents or the museum collection.
4.6 CCTV is used in the museum van Bommel van Dam building. CCTV recordings are stored for a reasonable period in accordance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). If museum van Bommel van Dam considers it necessary, CCTV recordings may be provided to the police.
4.7 In addition to the reasons listed in Article 3, museum van Bommel van Dam may refuse a Visitor access to the museum van Bommel van Dam building for a certain period:
- if the Visitor has damaged one or more objects during a previous visit to museum van Bommel van Dam or another museum through negligence, gross negligence and/or intentionally;
- if museum van Bommel van Dam has reasonable grounds to believe that the Visitor may damage one or more objects.
Museum van Bommel van Dam may always apply the security measures described in Article 3.5 to the Visitor concerned. The Visitor will be informed of a decision to refuse access as soon as possible and, where possible, in writing.
4.8 In the event of an emergency, such as the sudden disappearance of an artwork, a terrorist attack or another act of violence, museum van Bommel van Dam may close the doors and allow Visitors to leave the building one by one.
Visitors may then be asked to allow their bags and other belongings to be inspected by or on behalf of museum van Bommel van Dam. If a Visitor refuses to cooperate with an inspection, the museum may ask the Visitor to provide proof of identity before leaving the building.
4.9 Museum van Bommel van Dam regularly allows third parties to take photographs and make video recordings in the museum building. This material may be used for promotional purposes, including on the website and in brochures.
If a Visitor does not want identifiable images of themselves to be published, they can inform museum van Bommel van Dam. The museum will then make reasonable efforts to prevent further publication of the material.
4.10 In connection with coronavirus, Visitors must bring a face mask during their visit to museum van Bommel van Dam and wear it if required.
Article 5. House Rules
5.1 While in the museum van Bommel van Dam building, Visitors must:
a. not touch objects on display unless stated otherwise. Parents, teachers and other accompanying adults must make sure that minors, individuals or Groups under their supervision do not touch displayed objects;
b. not offer or provide any goods or services to other people, whether for payment or free of charge;
c. not disturb other Visitors, including by blocking their view of displayed objects for long periods or by making excessive noise;
d. not bring pets into the museum, with the exception of assistance dogs;
e. not smoke;
f. not eat or drink outside the café/restaurant. Food and drinks may not be taken into the exhibition spaces;
g. not take photographs, videos or film recordings using lights, flash equipment and/or tripods, including selfie sticks, unless the Visitor has received written permission from museum van Bommel van Dam in advance;
h. not draw or paint without prior permission or instructions from museum van Bommel van Dam regarding the materials that may be used. Visitors can ask for permission at the information desk.
5.2 Parents, carers, teachers and other accompanying adults are responsible at all times for the behaviour of the minors, individuals or Groups they are supervising.
5.3 For primary education, two accompanying adults must be present for every Group of 15 pupils.
For secondary education, at least one and no more than two accompanying adults must be present for every Group of 15 pupils.
Museum van Bommel van Dam reserves the right to refuse access to Groups that do not meet these requirements. For other rules relating to school visits, please see Section 4 of these General Visitor Terms and Conditions.
5.4 Guided tours have a maximum Group size of 15 people per guide, unless otherwise agreed.
5.5 In addition to the rules in Article 5.1 regarding photography and filming, photographs, videos and/or film recordings made in museum van Bommel van Dam may only be used for commercial purposes with the museum’s express written permission. Information about applicable fees can be requested from the information desk.
Article 6. Online purchase of Entrance Tickets and Activity Tickets
6.1 Entrance Tickets and Activity Tickets, including tickets for guided tours, can be purchased in advance via www.vanbommelvandam.nl.
An order is considered to have been placed when the customer has completed the order form and sent it electronically to museum van Bommel van Dam by clicking “confirm order” in step 5 of the ordering process.
The agreement between the customer and museum van Bommel van Dam is completed when museum van Bommel van Dam sends a booking confirmation by email.
6.2 Online purchases must be paid using one of the payment methods offered by the payment provider used by museum van Bommel van Dam. The Terms and Conditions of the relevant bank and payment method also apply.
6.3 Article 11.2 concerning privacy and opt-in consent applies to all online purchases.
6.4 Tickets purchased online do not need to be printed. They can also be scanned from a mobile phone when entering the museum.
6.5 Museum van Bommel van Dam is not required to refund an unused Entrance Ticket or Activity Ticket, unless Article 6.4 applies.
6.6 The following situations will never result in an obligation for museum van Bommel van Dam to refund money or pay compensation to a Visitor:
a. one or more objects from the museum’s permanent collection are not on display;
b. part of museum van Bommel van Dam is closed, including because exhibitions are being installed or removed;
c. regular opening hours are changed because of emergency-response exercises or because museum van Bommel van Dam considers a full or partial evacuation necessary during an emergency;
d. inconvenience caused by other Visitors, including noise, inappropriate behaviour, harassment or theft;
e. damage to or loss of personal belongings in public areas caused by other Visitors;
f. inconvenience caused by maintenance work, including renovations or the installation or rearrangement of spaces;
g. inconvenience caused by museum facilities not working properly;
h. refusal of access to the museum van Bommel van Dam building;
i. loss of an Admission Ticket or Entrance Ticket.
Article 7. Limitation of museum van Bommel van Dam’s liability
7.1 Museum van Bommel van Dam is only liable for damage suffered by a Visitor if and to the extent that the damage is a direct result of gross negligence or intentional actions by museum van Bommel van Dam.
Any compensation will in all cases be limited to the lower of the following amounts:
a. the amount paid to museum van Bommel van Dam by its insurer for the individual case concerned; or
b. the amount paid to museum van Bommel van Dam by a third party in relation to the individual case concerned.
7.2 In the event of death or physical injury, the total liability of museum van Bommel van Dam will under no circumstances exceed the compensation arrangement described in Article 7.1.
7.3 Museum van Bommel van Dam is not liable for indirect damage, including consequential damage, loss of profit or salary, or lost savings.
Article 8. Force majeure
8.1 Force majeure applies when circumstances arise that cannot be attributed to museum van Bommel van Dam.
For museum van Bommel van Dam, force majeure includes any foreseeable or unforeseeable situation that makes it so difficult for the museum to carry out an agreement that carrying it out becomes temporarily or permanently impossible or unreasonable.
8.2 This also includes circumstances involving people, services or organisations that museum van Bommel van Dam wishes to use to carry out the agreement with the Visitor, as well as situations that qualify as force majeure or as suspensive or terminating conditions for those people, services or organisations, or where those parties fail to meet their obligations.
Article 9. Lost property
9.1 Items found by Visitors in museum van Bommel van Dam can be handed to a member of staff or to the ticket and information desk.
9.2 Museum van Bommel van Dam will keep found items in storage.
9.3 If someone claims to be the owner of a found item, they can either collect the item themselves or have it sent to them at their own expense.
In both cases, the owner must be able to provide suitable identification. If museum van Bommel van Dam has doubts about whether the person is the owner, the museum may ask for proof of ownership.
9.4 Museum van Bommel van Dam reserves the right to destroy found items that have not been collected after three months.
Article 10. Complaints procedure
10.1 Visitors with a complaint can complete a complaint form available from the information desk.
Article 11. Privacy
11.1 Museum van Bommel van Dam and all organisations connected to it consider the careful handling of data from visitors to the museum van Bommel van Dam website very important. This includes the part of the website used for the online sale of Entrance Tickets and Activity Tickets.
Museum van Bommel van Dam’s Privacy Policy is published on the website.
11.2 By ticking the box “I would like to be kept informed about the activities of museum van Bommel van Dam”, the website visitor agrees that museum van Bommel van Dam and/or an affiliated organisation may occasionally provide information about museum activities and products.
Visitors will always be given the option to indicate that they no longer wish to receive such information.
Article 12. Other conditions and applicable law
12.1 These General Visitor Terms and Conditions do not affect the possible application of other contractual terms, conditions and/or policies of museum van Bommel van Dam, as published from time to time on www.vanbommelvandam.nl.
12.2 Prices for products and services intended for private Visitors are stated including VAT.
12.3 These General Visitor Terms and Conditions and the agreement between the Visitor and museum van Bommel van Dam are governed by Dutch law.
Any disputes that cannot be resolved by mutual agreement will be submitted exclusively to the competent court in Roermond, unless museum van Bommel van Dam chooses another competent court.
Section 2 – Special Conditions for Educational Activities
Article 13. Purchase of Activity Tickets
13.1 Activity Tickets can be purchased:
a. by paying at the museum van Bommel van Dam ticket desk before the Educational Activity begins; or
b. by purchasing a ticket through the museum van Bommel van Dam website as described in Article 6.
13.2 An Activity Ticket does not include admission to the exhibition spaces of museum van Bommel van Dam unless this follows from the nature of the Educational Activity, for example a guided tour taking place in one or more exhibition spaces.
Article 14. Cancellation, changes and transfer of an Activity Ticket
14.1 Once an agreement as described in Article 13 has been completed, the purchased Educational Activity cannot be cancelled and the purchase price cannot be refunded.
14.2 If an Educational Activity is offered on several dates, changing the date is not possible unless museum van Bommel van Dam agrees to the request in writing.
A request must be sent by email to educatie@vanbommelvandam.nl at least seven days before the Educational Activity. The email must include the name of the participant or participants, the original date and the requested new date.
Whether the request can be accepted depends on how early the request is made and on availability on the requested date. Museum van Bommel van Dam will make the final decision.
14.3 A participant may only cancel a booked Educational Activity in the event of clear force majeure, as determined by museum van Bommel van Dam.
Late arrival does not give the participant the right to cancel. An Educational Activity that takes place over several days cannot be cancelled once it has started.
14.4 Unless otherwise stated on the website, an Activity Ticket may be transferred to another person if:
a. the participant sends the full details of the other person to museum van Bommel van Dam by email at educatie@vanbommelvandam.nl in good time;
b. the other person meets all conditions for the Educational Activity, such as a minimum age; and
c. museum van Bommel van Dam agrees to the transfer by email.
14.5 Museum van Bommel van Dam reserves the right to change the programme of an Educational Activity. Participants will be informed by email or telephone.
If the content of an Educational Activity changes significantly, museum van Bommel van Dam will give participants the option to cancel free of charge.
A change of location is not considered a significant change, but a change of date, starting time and/or the content of the Educational Activity may be.
Article 15. Communication about Educational Activities
15.1 For practical questions, the Organiser can contact info@vanbommelvandam.nl.
For questions about the content of an Educational Activity, the Organiser can contact educatie@vanbommelvandam.nl.
You can also write to museum van Bommel van Dam at the address stated in Article 1.6. Please clearly include your name, address, telephone number and, where possible, your email address.
Section 3 – Special Conditions for Organisers of Group Visits
Article 16. General Conditions
16.1 Section 3 applies to all agreements between museum van Bommel van Dam and the Organiser of a Group Visit as described in Article 1.5. All agreements are made between the Organiser and museum van Bommel van Dam.
16.2 A Group Visit is only possible if Entrance Tickets for every participant in the Group are purchased online before the visit.
Registering a Group does not guarantee that there will be no waiting time at the ticket desk or entrance.
16.3 For all questions about Group Visits and guided tours, the Organiser can contact educatie@vanbommelvandam.nl.

16.4 Museum van Bommel van Dam reserves the right to refuse Groups access to the museum.
The Organiser is responsible for making sure that all members of the Group follow the General Visitor Terms and Conditions.
Group bookings cannot be changed or cancelled.
16.5 When a Group arrives at museum van Bommel van Dam, one representative of the Group must report to the ticket desk and present the Entrance Tickets that the Organiser purchased online in advance.
The rest of the Group is asked not to wait around the ticket or information desk.
Article 17. Conditions for a guided tour with a museum van Bommel van Dam guide
17.1 An Organiser who wants their Group to be accompanied by a museum van Bommel van Dam guide must book and pay for the guide online in advance through the museum van Bommel van Dam website.
17.2 We recommend booking a guide at least two weeks in advance.
Museum van Bommel van Dam makes every effort to have enough guides available, but cannot guarantee that every Organiser requesting a guide will receive one.
If the required number of guides is unexpectedly unavailable, museum van Bommel van Dam will contact the Organiser at least one week in advance. The museum and Organiser will then work together to find a suitable alternative.
17.3 If the assigned guide is unable to give the tour, museum van Bommel van Dam will make every effort to find another guide. The Organiser will be informed as soon as possible.
Section 4 – Summary of Rules for School Visits
Article 18. School Visits
18.1 A school visit is considered a Group Visit as described in Article 16 of the General Visitor Terms and Conditions. Children up to and including the age of 8 have free admission to museum van Bommel van Dam.
18.2 Museum van Bommel van Dam asks pupils, teachers and accompanying adults to follow the rules below to help school visits run smoothly:
- For primary education, two accompanying adults are required for every 15 pupils.
- For secondary education, at least one and no more than two accompanying adults are required for every 15 pupils.
- Adults accompanying a school visit may enter free of charge. As an accompanying adult, you are responsible for the behaviour of the pupils under your supervision from the beginning to the end of the visit.
- The cloakroom is free of charge. Please make sure that pupils bring as little luggage as possible to museum van Bommel van Dam. This helps everyone move through the museum more easily.
- Please discuss the following FIVE rules with the pupils before visiting the museum.
The FIVE rules
- Think of other Visitors. Do not make too much noise and do not run through the building.
- Take care around the art collection. Do not touch the artworks.
- Smoking, eating and drinking are not allowed in the museum building, except in the café/restaurant.
- Phone calls are not allowed in the exhibition spaces. Photographs must be taken without flash.
- Museum van Bommel van Dam has a strict safety policy. Pointed and/or sharp objects may not be brought into the museum and will be confiscated.
These General Visitor Terms and Conditions of Stichting Museum van Bommel van Dam were approved by the museum’s management. The General Visitor Terms and Conditions are published on www.vanbommelvandam.nl.
